BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - According to authorities, a West Alabama Narcotics Task Force officer initiated a traffic stop for speeding at 6:56 p.m. Tuesday on Interstate 59/20 near the 359 intersection.

Police say the driver, a 26-year-old man from Gallion, was asked to exit the vehicle due to smelling like marijuana.

The man exited the vehicle and ran towards traffic when he was struck by an 18-wheeler, then ran into the woods.

Police say they and two truck drivers pursued him into the woods. The officers took him into custody and called an ambulance. The man was transported to DCH with injuries that didn’t appear to be life-threatening.

The officers say they will follow up and obtain warrants to charge him at a later date.

Interstate traffic was diverted to 359 for about 25 minutes.
