BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - The sky will remain mostly cloudy overnight with temperatures falling into the 40s. Temperatures may drop to near 39º in some areas, but we will remain well above freezing, and no precipitation is expected.

Our Saturday will start off dry, but rain will be increasing in the afternoon. Be ready for a cold and rainy setup through the afternoon and overnight. We could end up with over an inch of rain in some areas with a few rumbles of thunder, but no organized severe weather is expected.

Further northwest and northeast of our coverage area, a major winter storm will be developing. Parts of the Carolinas are currently under ice storm warnings for the possibility of significant accumulations of freezing rain.

As far as local impacts, we could see rain start to mix with snow after 8 a.m. The precipitation type could go back and forth between all rain and a mix for several hours on Sunday. This may transition to all snow at times, especially in areas to the north and in the higher elevations. The ground will be wet, surface temperatures will be above freezing throughout the morning, and a ribbon of slightly milder air will be wrapping into the storm system. This will limit accumulation potential. For many areas, there will be little to no accumulation, but if the precipitation briefly switches over, we could have a quick coating on rooftops and grassy surfaces. The greatest accumulation potential remains to the far north and in the higher elevations. Any type of weather forecast can always change, so check in for updates just in case we need to make some adjustments.

Plan for a cold/wintry Sunday and remain weather alert for the possibility of some slippery travel in areas where we see snow to the north, especially Sunday night as temperatures fall below freezing.
